| IT'S MY GUILTY PLEASURE!!! I'm a real fan of horror-supernatural-weird-ghostly-other-worldly-type entertainment. That is why I adore such games as Silent Hill, Biohazard, Clock Tower, and movies like The Ring, Ring 0, Sleepy Hollow, Blaire Witch Project, Stir of Echoes, etc. So when a new TV series that had a similar feel to it was going to be shown... I had to watch. Have you ever seen Chito Rono's TV series SPIRITS in ABS CBN? It's the TV series about a group of kids with "special powers" (third eye, firestarter, mind reader, etc.). It's the show after TV Patrol. Please be familiar with it. Well, I'm going to admit it's my guilty pleasure. It is just so good. It's not corny, (no ok minimal baduy-Balagtas-will-probably-kill-me-if-he-wasn't-already-dead-lines, type of lines. The teeny type scenes aren't puke worthy; thanks to good acting (and the actors are cute lets give them that they fit the roles perfectly), and the scary-creepy-freaky scenes are scary-creepy-freaky; thanks to their wicked imagination) none of the characters are annoying, (well there is an exception, but he isn't THAT annoying now, each one has their won dilemma, each one is as real as the person sitting next to you, no pretentions at all, thank God) the creepy factor is so close to our culture, (I just LOVE the fact that Lotlot De Leon's character is a dead-huingry-for-revenge-mangkukulam! And she wants to be rised from the dead with the help of her son, Kawawa naman si Llyod. The elementals, the ghost, the "other world". So much fun!) and it has this dark side to it. Not just in a sense that they were dealing with the unknown, it also reflects the dark side of people, and what they can or are willing to do. (There was this episode in the series where Lotlot De Leon's character was talking to her son "Kuya Llyod" (at home we call him Kuya Llyod) and she was asking if he was really willing to help her with her resurrection. If he was willing to make sacrifices, like his school, his friends. There was also this episode where in all of them were dead and Kuya Llyod killed them all. And I also found it very creepy to have your dead mom bother you about her problem about being dead. Fucked up mom.) I also like the pace. Each episode will alsways keep you guessing because you have NO idea what will happen next. It's something very unfamiliar to the viewer so you can't help but watch the next episode because you just NEED to know what will happen. I also love the theme song, Rivermaya's You'll Be Safe Here It is such a good song. I just love the fact they are showing something like that on primetime TV. It's better than every freaking series that they have ever come up with. If ever I see Chito Rono I'm going to walk up to him, I'm going to smile and say "You rock!" Yeah, it is my guilty pleasure. I'm not that shy about it. It's a good series. Something I haven't seen in years. |
